Fight between basketball teams spreads from gym to parking lot.
Keymar, Md. — On January 31, 2025, shortly before 12 PM, deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, and EMS, responded to reports of a large fight with multiple injuries at the Silver Oak Academy in Keymar.
Once deputies arrived, they discovered that a physical altercation had occurred between the Silver Oak Academy basketball team and a visiting basketball team from outside of Carroll County. This altercation began inside the gym and continued out onto the parking lot where one of the visiting students attempted to use a pen to stab a student from Silver Oak Academy.
After the students were able to be separated, the visiting team’s staff and players entered their school vans and left the scene. Deputies were able to stop the vans and while conducting their investigation, the individual believed to have tried to use a pen as a weapon, attempted to escape from the scene. After a brief foot chase the student was taken into custody. While doing so, the 15 year old male student assaulted a Carroll County Deputy. The student was transported to Carroll Hospital for evaluation and after consultation with the Department of Juvenile Services, was charged on a juvenile referral.
Emergency Medical Services personnel evaluated multiple students and a staff member for minor injuries and transported two students to Carroll Hospital Center for treatment. Both were released from the hospital after being treated.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
