Frederick, Md (KM) A request for information has been sent out by Frederick County to developers to gauge their interest in and ideas for placing affordable housing units in the area around  the Prospect Center on Himes Avenue in Frederick near US Route 15.

She says the request for information went out this week. “This means affordable housing developers will have an opportunity to tell the county how we can best use that land to meet the needs of our working families, veterans and seniors,” she said.

The area around the Prospect Center has been discussed as a possible site for affordable housing. “It’s incredibly important to our community that we grow in the right areas and in the right ways,” she said “With easy access to our interstates, public transportation and government services, that area is ideal for housing that is truly attainable.”

During her presentation on Wednesday, the County Executive said affordable housing is a top priority in her administration. During the transition period, Fitzwater says she convened a Quality of Life Committee which made ten recommendations to increase the county’s affordable housing stock. “One recommendation was to conduct a comprehensive review of all county-owned land which is under-utilized, or not utilized at to identify potential   affordable housing opportunities,”: she said.

Fitzwater says the information provided by developers will be part of the next steps in the process to bring affordable housing to the area next to the Prospect Center.
